Programme of Events

Our last concert was in February when we sang a programme of Classical Favourites in Millhouses Methodist Church.
The centrepiece of the concert was Komm, Jesu, Komm by J S Bach, an uplifting motet for double choir. The choir was accompanied by a string quartet for the ever-popular Gloria by Vivaldi and Schubert's Mass in G. Haydn's Te Deum and Monteverdi's Beatus Vir completed a programme which was clearly enjoyed by the audience.

Earlier in our 2011/2012 season we had two concerts collaborating with the excellent Harlequin Brass: our Christmas concert included music traditional Christmas Carols, a medley of popular Christmas songs such as Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and I’m dreaming of a White Christmas, and a couple of songs from the “Muppet’s Christmas Carol” all arranged for brass and choir.

In March we celebrated the Jubilee (again with Harlequin Brass joined by organist Jonathan Gooing) with a thrilling evening of music for brass, organ and choir Happy and Glorious.
The main work was John Rutter's Gloria, and alongside this was the well-received Yorkshire premiere of a setting for the same forces of the Benedicite by Ian Crew. This work was commissioned by conductor Robert Webb when he worked with Henley Choral Society for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and it was fitting that it was performed again for the Diamond Jubilee. The programme was completed with the fourth movement from Saint Saens’ Organ Symphony and some favourite from the Queen’s Coronation: Parry’s I was glad, Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Gibbons’ O clap your hands and Vaughan Williams’ O taste and see.

In July we celebrated in Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, great American choral music and song joined by local baritone, Peter Taylor. The songs covered a wide range of styles and periods from William Billings' Euroclydon (c 1780) to the Mesa Songs by the contemporary composer Judith Cloud, who gave us special permission to perform them in England for the first time.

The last concert of 2012, in November, was a programme of Music Celebrating Music, inspired by the famous Hymn to St Cecilia by Benjamin Britten. We also sang Alan Woods' Ode on St Cecilia's Day, commissioned by the Sterndale Singers in 1998. Added to these was a selection of part songs, anthems and madrigals all with music and singing as their theme. Well known titles included Byrd Sing joyfully, Vaughan Williams Silence and Music, Parry Music when soft voices die, and Gershwin I got rhythm.
